Ethiopian and Eritrean Meskel Celebration Brings Faith, Culture and Community Together Across the GTA
Toronto, Ontario — September 27, 2026 — Members of the Ethiopian and Eritrean community across the Greater Toronto Area came together this September to celebrate Meskel, one of Ethiopia’s most significant religious and cultural holidays. The annual celebration brought together families, church members, youth and community elders for a colourful expression of faith, heritage and community spirit.
Meskel, meaning “cross” in Ge’ez, commemorates the finding of the True Cross according to Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition. Celebrated annually in Ethiopia and Eritrea and by Ethiopian and Eritrean communities around the world, the holiday is particularly known for the lighting of the Demera, a large ceremonial bonfire.

Four Ethiopian Female Artists Bring Comedy and Laughter to Toronto on November 1
Toronto’s Habesha community is getting ready for an afternoon of laughter and entertainment as four Ethiopian female artists — Meron Getnet, Hana Yohannes, Tigist Nigatu and Frehiwoth Melese — come together for a special comedy show on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Following her move to Canada, she has been producing informative and community-focused content, including topics and stories connected to the Habesha diaspora community in Canada.
Completing the four-woman cast are Tigist Nigatu and Frehiwoth Melese, joining Meron and Hanna for a comedy production created and presented by the four female artists.
